The Albany Guardian Society 2020 Summer Institute semester offers a variety of programs in the following broad categories:

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all classes will be held through Zoom. (If you have any questions about Zoom, please call 518-434-2140.) There is no cost to attend, however, registration is required.

Effectively Using Your iPhone – Apple (Beginner)

This class is for those that are just starting to learn how to use an iPhone. You will learn how to make a phone call, send text messages, send emails, set reminders, manage your calendar, and even take pictures.

Facebook and Facetime offer two distinct ways to connect with family, and friends. Learn to navigate Facebook, a social media and networking service now boasting over 2.5 billion active users. Communicating with friends and family, posting pictures and reconnecting with past acquaintances are a few of the items covered in this class. Facetime is Apple’s video and audio application that lets users communicate with one another face to face. Learn two great ways to stay in touch!

Seniors on The Move! Practical Tips to Help Seniors Stay Active, Build Muscle, and Maintain Flexibility and Balance

Today’s seniors are lively and vibrant and seek ways to keep moving. This presentation will highlight simple ways to be more active. A discussion on how to incorporate exercise in your daily routine and practical tips for staying active. Wear comfortable clothing and be prepared for a live demonstration of simple low impact exercises that help build muscle and maintain flexibility and balance. All exercises can be done easily in your own home without any equipment.

This course will help first-time users become comfortable using their iPad. The Village Movement in the Capital Region

The “Village” movement was founded with the idea of “neighbors helping neighbors” with the goal of seniors remaining independent in their homes. Villages are membership-driven, grassroots, nonprofit organizations run by volunteers and/or paid staff that coordinate access to a variety of services including transportation, home repairs, and social events. Learn how to start a Village and where Villages are being developed in the Capital Region.
