Welcome to the Albany Guardian Society Institute. Our Spring 2016 semester offers programs in the following broad categories:

These categories offer a variety of selections on topics of importance to a wide audience. Please scroll down to see all of the Institute’s offerings for Spring 2016. We will continue to develop and schedule programming throughout the upcoming months and invite you to review our catalog periodically. There is no cost to attend our programs; however, registration is required for each course you wish to attend. 13   Effectively Using Your iPad (Beginner)

The iPad is increasingly becoming a convenient tool for seniors to access movies, websites, take pictures, email, FaceTime, use social media, and more. This course will help first-time users become comfortable using their iPad. Learn about iPad terminology, various parts of the iPad, interacting with the iPad touch screen using gestures, and modifying settings. Explore some of the iPad apps and camera basics. 13   Wills, Health Care Proxies/Living Wills, MOLST

A discussion on important legal documents: (1) Wills that provide directions for what happens to certain assets at the time of a person’s death; (2) Health Care Proxies/Living Wills, and the newer MOLST document, that allow the signer to plan in advance for health care decisions if the signer can no longer make his/her own decisions; and (3) What happens if a person has not signed these documents.

14   Gardening for Seniors

Join a Capital Roots educator for an introductory course to provide senior gardeners with fundamental gardening information needed for a successful growing season. The presentation will cover key points related to basic organic practices including practical tips on soil building, weed suppression, and maintaining a healthy, productive garden. Special adaptations to assist a senior gardener will also be reviewed.

19   Tell Me More About Osteoporosis

Many adults are affected by osteoporosis, a progressive condition in which bones weaken and become more brittle. An estimated 50 percent of women and 25 percent of men older than age 50 will experience a broken bone because of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis-related bone weakening can be slowed down in several ways, by both lifestyle changes and medications. This program will describe the disease process and ways to treat it and to prevent serious fractures.

24   Introduction to the Village Movement

Since the establishment of Beacon Hill Village in Boston in 2001, Capital District seniors have been interested in forming “Villages” that are membership-driven, grass-roots organizations that, through both volunteers and paid staff, coordinate access to affordable services to assist aging in place. These services can include recreational, health and wellness programs, home repairs, social and educational activities, and other day-to-day needs enabling individuals to remain connected to their community throughout the aging process. 25   Brain Health

Research suggests that lifestyle choices may have a more profound impact on brain health than was previously thought. The combination of good nutrition, physical activity, mental stimulation, not smoking, and a varied social network for significant personal interactions all contribute to improved brain health. 26   Making Smart Decisions for Aging Well
