Albany Guardian Society, located in Albany, New York, is one of the region’s oldest charitable institutions. In 1850, the benevolent members of the Dorcas Temperance Society found many cases of suffering which they had no power to relieve. They felt that establishing a home for the aged and helpless, along with friendless children, would do much to improve conditions. Fifty-six dollars was collected to begin this effort, and in 1852, the Office of County Deeds certified the original charter for Albany Guardian Society.
From its inception in the mid-1800s until closing the home in 2000, an adult home continuously served seniors. A strategic planning process helped Albany Guardian Society reconfirm its mission to serve seniors. New initiatives were developed which allowed Albany Guardian Society to reach out and benefit more seniors than ever before.
From providing housing for the aged and helpless in 1852 to providing programs for today’s senior population,
the essence of our efforts has remained the same – service to seniors.
