Across this state, volunteers, professionals, nonprofit organizations and local governments have been working hard to bring cost-effective and useful services to their aging citizens. Many of their programs demonstrate a high level of resourcefulness, creativity, and collaboration.  We hope these examples will inspire and energize you.  Many are easily replicable and perhaps you’ll find yourself asking “Why don’t we have something like this in our community?”

Albany Guardian Society, in partnership with FJC, A Foundation of Philanthropic Funds, hosted the 2010 Great Ideas in Aging Contest in the fall of 2010 and received 21 entries. We asked each entry to provide the following information:

We asked each entry to provide the following information:

Is your program innovative?

Does it cost less than $100,000?

Does it help people remain independent in their community?

Is your program easy to replicate?

A small panel of aging experts from across the state helped us select the winning entry in each of three categories:

1. Community based services that help people age in place, including self-help type programs

2. Older Adult Family Support/Caregiver Support programs, including Kincare

3. All other programs

We hope you enjoy learning about these excellent programs. If you would like more information about any of the entries, please contact them directly. These applicants expressed a willingness to help interested parties replicate their programs and this is a good opportunity for your organization or community to benefit from the efforts of these organizations.
